Factors Affecting Turhal Vocational School Students' Occupational Choice Competencies and Profession Selection (ISAS 2018_187)

ABSTRACT The whole set of community-determined activities based on systematic skills and knowledge gained at the end of a
particular training to produce goods or services for people and to receive financial income is called profession. The choice of
profession is to make an effort to decide on one of the professions preferred by the individual and to make preparation for this
profession. Biological, sociological, economic, political, psychological or personal and luck are related factors that are
influential in the choice of profession. The aim of the study is to determine the factors affecting the occupational choice
competencies and profession selection for Turhal Vocational School’s students. The profession selection qualification scale
developed by Hitler (2010) was used in the study. 105 students enrolled in the Biomedical, Graphic Design and Accounting
programs participated in the study. 56 of the participants were male, 49 were female, the average age was 20.5, the average of
the family income was 2078.6, the education level of the mothers was generally primary school graduates (n = 89) and the
father students status was mostly primary school graduates (n = 79) and high school graduates (19). 6.7% of the mothers and
73.3% of the fathers work in a job. 70.5% of the participants stated that they had chosen Turhal Vocational School willingly
while 75.2% of the participants’ registered department were as desired. The greatest factor influencing participants'
occupational choices was the university admission score. It is discovered that the influential factor of the students’ school
selections is their families and their own preferences. The vast majority of students have confidence with the profession that
they are studying and believe the profession has a promising future. The majority of students stated that they prefer to have
knowledge about the possibilities, advantages and disadvantages of their profession, possibilities of progress and working
environment. The gender of the students and the departments they registered have no effect on the factors influencing the
choice of profession.
