ABSTRACT Energy dissipaters used in open channels are devices designed to reduce the flow velocity and allow water to pass downstream without harming water structures and environment. In this study the effect of energy dissipaters on energy loss is investigated dependent on different physical variables. Experiments are conducted in a rectangular laboratory channel in steady flow conditions. Shape of energy dissipaters’ and the distance between drop wall and energy dissipaters’ effect on hydraulic jump length and distance were investigated. Different flowrates are used to examine the effect of the flow velocity. It is aimed to generalize the optimum geometry and physical quantities (shape and distance) for similar situations.
