The Investigation Effect of SBS Polymer on the Rheological Properties of Bitumen (ISAS 2018_207)

ABSTRACT The major part of freight transportation in Turkey is conducted by highway, the increase in the number of trucks and other heavy vehicles, as well as legislations allowing an increase in axle load that lead to deterioration such as rutting in flexible road pavement. Polymer additives are used in the binder to extend service life of the flexible pavements, thereby improve the physical and chemical properties of the binder.

In this study, SBS modified binders were prepared by adding stiren-butadien-stiren (SBS) polymer with a proportion of 3%, 5% and 7% to bitumen obtained from Kırıkkale refinery having a penetration degree of B 50/70.

SBS modified bitumens were tested by penetration and softening point test which are founded in Polymer Modified Bitumen Technical Specifications. In order to investigate the phase separation during storage, storage test was conducted on SBS modified bitumens. Aging properties of SBS modified bitumens were also investigated by means of rolling thin film oven (RTFO) test. In order to investigate the convenience of the binders to Polymer Modified Bitumen technical specifications high temperature performance grade of binders was determined by dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) test.

From obtained results it was determined that stiffness of binders was increased and thermal sensitivity was decreased with rising SBS content.
