Benefits of Converting CT and MR Databases to Layered Manufacturing and Solid Modeling in Different Surgeons and Medical Researches (ISAS 2018_226)

ABSTRACT Today, it is possible to access a lot of information by using medical imaging data (CT and MR). In recent years, CT and MR data have been processed and transferred to computer aided design (CAD) programs. In fact, these solid models modified in the CAD environment are transformed into real models with layered manufacturing methods that operate with metal powder. In this way, custom implant or prosthesis construction can be realized. Another process is to convert these solid models, prepared in CAD environment, into simple plastic solid models from PLA or ABS material with simple layered manufacturing equipment. These simple models can give some important information to the surgeon or researcher in terms of volume or shape. In this
study, CT data from five different patients were transformed to solid models of desired bone or soft tissues by performing local thresholding, parasite clearance (sneeze) and segmentation using 3D Slicer software. The resulting solid models were recorded as STL file extensions used by 3D printers. The registered models are manufactured with 2nd generation CUBE 3D printer. One of the models that have been manufactured has developed training material used in dental treatment and filed a patent application. In another study, the tumor developed in the lungs was fabricated as a one-year growth model. Other studies also allowed preliminary work to be done before surgical intervention. Preliminary studies on the solid model show positive results in the reduction of the duration of the surgical operation.
