ABSTRACT Energy is at the forefront of the needs to maintain the continuity of life and make it easier, and the energy demand is increasingly dependent on population growth. Today, fossil energy resources are widely used to meet energy demand and renewable energy resources are preferred in small quantities. In the near future, the exhaustion of fossil energy resources leads researchers and energy producers to find new resources and more efficient systems. The most important point that needs to be addressed in this regard is the efficient use of renewable energy resources that nature presents to humanity. Although renewable energy resources are environmentally friendly, the most important disadvantage is that they are intermittent depending on location, weather and time. This undesirable feature can be solved by storing the obtained energy for a while for later use. The energy obtained from many different resources can be stored as mechanical energy, chemical energy, electric energy, magnetic energy and thermal energy. For example, heat is produced by utilizing air or water heaters and electric energy is generated by applying photovoltaic systems from solar energy which is one of the renewable energy resources and these generated energy is stored as thermal and electric energy through appropriate designs respectively.

In the scope of this study, existing methods used for solar thermal energy storage and studies in the literature have been investigated in order to give information to the researchers. Solar energy is actively used in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, cooling and drying applications through simple and useful structures. However, designs and applications that work with this energy resource can only be actively used at times when radiation is present. Energy storage makes it possible for these systems to operate for a while under the absence of radiation. In this respect, the thermal storage of solar energy is important. Thermal energy is stored in the form of sensible heat and latent heat. Water is the most important storage material in sensible heat storage, while phase change materials in latent heat storage come into prominence. This work has been dealt with because of the increasing interest in the solar energy storage.
